This episode begins in the werk room immediately following the Trixie Mattel’s second elimination. (Click here for a recap of last week’s episode) Ginger is glad that she is able to stay in the competition another week after having a rough time in the dancing challenge. The bitchiness comes out a little in this scene as Ginger interrupts Violet and Katya’s little self-congratulatory “pat each other on the back” session and asks Violet how it feels to be the only queen who has not had to lip sync for her life at some point. Ginger says she just wants to see Violet lip sync because she hasn’t had to. Violet immediately snaps back and asks Ginger what it’s like to finally have to deal with a weakness after being strong the entire competition.
It’s time for this week’s mini-challenge! Ru enters the werk room and announces one of the traditions of Drag Race: the queens will be creating drag puppets and putting on a puppet show to make fun of one another! They each reach into the gloryhole to find out which of their competitors they will be representing. Katya picks Ginger Minj’s puppet; Ginger picks Violet’s puppet; Pearl chooses Kennedy’s puppet; Kennedy selects Pearl’s puppet; and of course Violet chooses Katya’s puppet. This segment is so hilarious to watch! Pearl’s drag puppet of Kennedy makes fun of that hideous look she had on the runway where she looked like a scalded chicken or a “deranged Tony the Tiger with rhinestones.” Kennedy’s bit made fun of Pearl’s extremely laid back, sleepy demeanor. Violet made fun of Katya not really being from Russia and the fact that she used to smoke meth. Katya makes fun of Ginger’s makeup and the black spray paint that she uses on her forehead. Ginger takes the opportunity to throw shade at herself while she makes fun of Violet’s tiny waist. Ru announces that the winner of this challenge is Ginger Minj!
RuPaul announces this week’s main challenge, along with special guest Hello Kitty! The queens must design and create their own Hello Kitty eleganza using the Hello Kitty products provided to them. While they are designing their looks with the Hello Kitty theme, the look still must be their own. Ginger gets a head start on choosing items to use in designing her runway look. Kennedy, Katya and Ginger are all stressed about this challenge. Violet, on the other hand, is ecstatic about this challenge because she excels at designing costume concept and “flawlessly” executing them. Ru comes back to the werk room with another special guest: former Drag Race judge Santino Rice, who gives the girls advice to get their looks together and will be serving as one of the guest judges on the main stage. Ginger immediately floods her basement because he “is one sexy man.” As Ru and Santino are about to exit the werk room, he announces that there is a second part to the challenge: they have to create a second look. They must turn themselves into a character that Hello Kitty will want to call her new BFF!
It is now time to hit the main stage once again! First, the girls will be showcasing their Hello Kitty BFF characters! First is Violet with her character that loves to look in the mirror and wants to be a fairy or a model. Next is Ginger Minj and she is dressed as a cow version of Hello Kitty. She dreams of becoming a designer handbag or a filet mignon. Next is Pearl and she is from Brooklyn and dreams of becoming a rocket scientist or a nail technician. She has a ratchet personality. Next is Katya with her Siberian socialist character. Finally is Kennedy aka “Sweet Hips” and she loves to fry chicken and play on the monkey bars! Now, it’s time for the queens to showcase their custom Hello Kitty eleganza! The best looks, in my opinion, belonged to Violet Chachki, Katya and Ginger Minj, while Pearl’s was rather lazy and looked like she wrapped herself in a blanket. After the judges critique each queen for their looks, it is determined that Violet Chachki is the winner of the main challenge!
The bottom two this week are Kennedy and Katya and they now must lip sync for their life! They perform to Katy Perry’s “Roar” and this lip sync was EPIC! They both gave it their all and there was tons of energy between the both of them. After the lip sync, RuPaul decides that Kennedy moves on to the top 4 while Katya is the next one to sashay away from the competition.
There was some controversy buzzing around Twitter that Kennedy broke the rules during her lip sync. Apparently, it was established in season 3 after Mimi Imfurst’s lip sync that queens were no longer allowed to leave the stage during the lip sync. Kennedy jumped and did the splits in front of the stage. I’m not sure if this is an official rule that was set for future seasons or not. Let’s just remember that this IS Ru’s show and what she says… goes. I was not happy with the results of the lip sync but I’ll live with it. Last night, however, was a different story. I was mad!
What are your thoughts on the lip sync? Were the rules broken or is it not a big deal? Who do you think will make the final 3 and who is your pick to win the title of America’s Next Drag Superstar? Let me know in the comments below or on Twitter!
