It kind of saddens me to say this, but season 7 of RuPaul’s Drag Race is quickly coming to a close! In just under two weeks, the winner will be crowned and we will be left with an empty feeling until next year when we get to start this all over again. Last week, Katya sashayed away from the competition and America wept as our favorite Soviet Socialist’s dreams of becoming America’s Next Drag Superstar were shattered. (For a complete recap of last week’s devastating episode, click here) After this episode, our final three for season 7 will be in place! Read on to find out who slays and stays in the competition!
“Hello, Hello, Hello!” Usually this is the point where RuPaul enters the werk room to inform the queens of the latest challenge. This time, it is Michelle Visage who enters… when she shows up in the werk room each season, you KNOW it’s getting real. She informs them that they are all invited to a one-on-one final meal with Mama Ru! She also informs them of their final challenge of the season. They will be working with choreographer Candis Cayne to work on their dance moves because they will each be starring in RuPaul’s newest music video: “Born Naked.” They will also be acting with director Matthew Anderson. Michelle tells the ladies that this is NOT the time to be half-steppin’ it. One more queen will be eliminated and EDITED OUT of the final video! Bitch ain’t playin’, y’all!
Each of the final 4 queens meet individually with Mama Ru for a chat about their personal lives and their performance on Drag Race. Up first is Kennedy Davenport who reveals that his dad struggled at first with him being gay but they eventually had a great relationship and he was the one that encouraged Kennedy to go on Drag Race before he passed away in 2013. Kennedy also reveals that it’s always been a struggle as he has had to shoulder the burden of caring for his mentally disabled sister and trying to make ends meet. Next is Ginger Minj’s turn to meet with Ru. Ginger says that his mom is his biggest supporter while his dad is not part of his life after running out on them when Ginger was a teenager. She has used humor and jokes as a coping mechanism to deal with the torment. Next is Violet and he didn’t really have as big of a sob story presented as the other queens did. He admits that he was overshadowed by his sister and he had to have confidence in himself and be his own biggest fan. He also talks about how he is working hard to overcome the impression that he is shady. Finally is Pearl who talks about going through a tumultuous childhood filled with psychological and physical pain. He says that at this point that can break his spirit.
The time has come for the final four to shoot the music video for RuPaul’s “Born Naked.” They have to perform their choreography in front of a green screen under the direction of Candis Cayne. Some of the queens seemed to have a difficult time during this shoot. Ginger’s wig came unattached during her scene, but she recovered nicely and incorporated it into her routine. Pearl’s wig slides back and reveals her “boy hair” and Violet’s earring flies off during her shoot! THESE GIRLS ARE A MESS! On the other hand, Kennedy seemed to have a relatively easy time during her scenes and seemed to really nail the choreography.
For the next part of their challenge, the queens will be acting alongside RuPaul as three different characters, all of which will be edited together. Pearl seemed to have a little trouble not sounding monotone and boring with her part, while Kennedy had a hard time remembering lines. Ginger seemed to be at ease during this part of the challenge as she has been in all the acting challenges during the whole season. Violet also seems to have a little trouble with sounding monotone.
It’s the last time that the queens enter the werk room and it is divided between the younger queens, Violet and Pearl, and the Bitter Old Lady Brigade, Ginger and Kennedy. Kennedy talks about her first impression of Violet and how she is full of herself and how she hasn’t changed much. Ginger says that Violet isn’t really winner material as she is not mature enough to shoulder the responsibilities that being America’s Next Drag Superstar entails.
Now for the final main stage of RuPaul’s Drag Race season 7! The queens showcase their finest looks on the runway. Kennedy comes out in full pride rainbow decor complete with rhinestones! Next is Violet with her different look… no dress, but pants! She’s serving burlesque influence, Victor/Victoria, Marlene Dietrich. She still looked fierce regardless. Ginger comes out completely decked out in fringe and rhinestones! Her hair is as big as her personality. Finally, Pearl comes out in her vintage, over-the-top style.
Now, Ru shows childhood photos of each queen and asks them to give advice to their younger selves. Kennedy tells little Ruben that “it’ll be over soon and you will be respected for your gift.” Violet tells little Jason that he needs to be more patient with everyone and know that he is special and get to a ballet class! Ginger tells little Joshua that “you always have a friend in yourself” and that there will be “stupidity coming at you from a neverending parade of bigoted assholes…and you need to make yourself the grand marshal.” Pearl warns little Matthew that “you’re about to enter the toughest years of your life and it’s gonna suck!”
Before Ru makes her decision on which three move to the finale, it is time for the final lip sync for your life! All four of the queens must lip sync to RuPaul’s “Born Naked” and give it their all to remain in the competition! After a great peformance by all four of the ladies, it is hard to have to eliminate one, but someone has to go! In the end, Ru sends Kennedy Davenport to sashay away. LAGUARDIA. NEWARK. KENNEDY!
And there we have it! Season 7’s final three queens are in place: Ginger Minj, Violet Chachki and Pearl! Which queen do YOU want to see take the crown and become America’s Next Drag Superstar on June 1st? Let me know in the comments below or on Twitter @vince1187.
