Previously on Biiiiiiiiig Brother! We were introduced to this season’s fourteen new houseguests and learned about three of this season’s twisty twists! The Battle of the Block is back once again and there are twins in the house switching places with each other… and there will be a special guest taking over the house each week to introduce new twists into the game. Phil Keoghan of The Amazing Race introduced former racers Jeff and Jackie as houseguests fifteen and sixteen. James and Jason both won their HOH competitions. Read my recaps of the premiere here and here for a more detailed rundown.
Fast forward to tonight’s episode. We finally get to see the new intro featuring the new houseguests. Personally, I like this year’s more than last year’s because it didn’t seem as awkward. Except Jeff, who just kinda stood there swinging his arms like an idiot. (Get a sneak peek of the intro here.) But I digress… let’s get into the show! The first #BBtakeover guest, Phil Keoghan, left the houseguests to speculate what he meant when he told Da’Vonne and Vanessa that their risky decision to sit out the first HOH could bring them great rewards.
It’s time for James and Jason to show off their HOH rooms! This is the time every week when all the houseguests get to make the journey upstairs to kiss the HOH’s ass and pretend to care about their photos or whatever. Personally, I’d tell everyone to STAY OUT and let me enjoy MY space while they mingle downstairs with the peasants. James and Jason finally get the room to themselves to talk game. James doesn’t really have any idea yet as to who he wants to put up, but Jason throws out Steve’s name because he hasn’t interacted with him. He also mentions John, because he thinks he doesn’t seem like a dentist and that he’s lying about himself. Jason even thinks that John is lying about being from Scranton because that’s the town where The Office takes place. I wish I were making this up, because that is the single STUPIDEST thing I’ve ever heard someone say.
That horrible “GET READY FOR A TAKEOVER!” sound bite plays and the houseguests race to the living room to find out what’s going on. Phil is back on the screen and reveals to the group what his last part of the takeover entails. On The Amazing Race, racers can use a fast forward to skip all the tasks on a single leg of the race and go directly to the pit stop. Inspired by that, Phil gives Vanessa and Da’Vonne the #BBFastForward, which allows them to skip directly to week two by making them immune from this week’s nominations and eviction. On top of that, Vanessa and Da’Vonne both get to choose one of their housemates that will also be immune for the week. Vanessa holds individual meetings in the Hammock Room (may it rest in peace)… and she ends up choosing to give immunity to Austin, while Da’Vonne chooses to save Liz.
The bros Jace and Austin are outside by the hot tub and form a stupid little alliance called “Shelltown.” It even comes complete with them pretending to use phones. Obviously it’s a spin on the “Chilltown” alliance between Mike Boogie and Dr. Will, and their infamous diary room sessions where they would pretend to answer imaginary phones. Sometimes this show is so hard to watch, I swear. LOL! And why have these two still not gotten haircuts? Austin could look a lot hotter without the hair and Jace wouldn’t look like so much of a hippy… but hey… whatever.
It’s now time for the first nomination ceremony of the summer. I’m happy to say that those silly nomination eggs did NOT return this season, but unfortunately the key box and fake sword sound effects didn’t return either. I guess those are now officially a thing of the past. i think some of the suspense is lost when houseguests no longer wait to see if their key is in the box and whether or not they will be safe. Now it seems so rushed! But enough of me complaining about things. Everyone gathers around the table to wait for the verdict. Jason is up first and he nominates John and Becky for eviction. He says he has not connected well enough with them but wants them to compete for their safety blah blah blah. Now it’s James’ turn and he nominates Steve and Jackie. He doesn’t really give a reason as to why he nominated but says he is sure they will be able to get themselves off the block. I guess we’ll see about that, won’t we?
It’s now time for the four nominees to compete in the first Battle of the Block competition. The winning duo will be safe from eviction for the week and will dethrone the HOH that nominated them, putting that HOH in danger of being evicted. In “Du-BOB” the teams must build a new skyscraper by taking one block at a time across the steel beams to the other side of the platform. If they drop a piece or fall off, they have to go back and start over. It’s funny watching them lose balance and fall off the beams time after time. It doesn’t look THAT hard, but I’m not the one playing the game so I can’t talk. Poor Steve never could get his balance. Eventually, he just started crawling across the beam pushing his block in front of him. Whatever works, right? The two pairs look like they are neck-and-neck in building their skyscrapers but Jackie and Steve were just no match for John and Becky. Becky and John win the first Battle of the Block and are now safe from evictions for the week. Jason is dethroned as HOH and now is just one of the lowly common folk that are in danger of being evicted on Thursday night.
