After what was a crazy first leg of The Amazing Race Canada our teams are departing from Western Canada’s oldest city Victoria, British Columbia. Natalie and Meaghan are the first to depart at 4:18am and make their way to the airport for a short flight to Tofino, British Columbia. You might be wondering why they are staying in Western Canada for two legs of this race, but I promise it will all come clear and you will be shocked as to why at the end of the episode. There are three flights to Tofino each leaving an hour apart, so our teams are basically staying in the order in which they checked in on the map.
Once in Tofino the teams need to drive themselves Wickaninnish Beach to get their next clue. Everyone gets their clue to the detour. They are now on their way to Uculet Harbor and must decided between In Sharp Knives or Sharp Eyes. In Sharp Knives they must suit up in traditional fish factory gear and flawlessly filet 30lbs of Rock Fish. Teams here are only given a certain amount of fish, so if they screw up they can’t complete the task. In Sharp Eyes the teams must correctly separate 1000lbs Pacific Rock fish into 5 different species. Neither of these challenges seem particularly fun to me. I hate the smell of fish, I would suck at the filet challenge and the sorting challenge would take FOREVER! In true Rex and Bob fashion they have a little melt down in the car. I love watching these guys and I need them to stay in the race to the end. They along with Mickey and Pete they add my comic relief. Despite their meltdown they end up at the detour in Uculet Harbor first with Alain and Audrey not far behind them. Laura and Jackie and Michel and Pierre whose father owned a slaughterhouse are the only ones that choose to Sharp Knives right off the bat. Poor Laura and Jackie are vegetarians and figure out quickly that this is not the challenge for them. Michel and Pierre smoke this challenge are out of there in no time. Most teams pick Sharp Eyes thinking it would be the easier of the two. Audrey and Alain get confused and decide to switch tasks quickly. Sukhi and Jinder think that their biology background will make this sorting challenge easy for them, but quickly realize that isn’t the case. Although Mickey and Pete know every fish in Ontario, ocean fish have them stumped. Rex and Bob debate switching, Rex wants to and Bob doesn’t. Before the third flight even arrives at the harbor Alain and Audrey are on their way to the next challenge. Nicole and Cormac switch tasks, along with Meaghan and Natalie. Rex and Bob decide that if their next inspection isn’t correct they are switching as well. Lucky for the boys it was correct and off they go after Rex rips off Bob’s fish gear. After their first weigh in attempt Laura and Jackie realize they don’t have enough fish to complete the challenge and over to sorting they go. Mickey and Pete decided sorting isn’t for them and they go filet. After a few wrong inspections Jinder asks Sukhi to look at the clue which is in her pants and while looking for it she provides us with this episodes tag line of There’s a fish in my pants! Thank you Sukhi, you don’t hear that every day. Once they put the missing fish into their bins they are good to go. Teams start leaving and Ryan and Rob who decided to sort fish then decide to filet fish and then switch back to sorting because they ran out of fish. All after initially making the pact they won’t switch tasks EVER. I really hope this decision doesn’t come back to bite them! Jen and Shawn give a helpful hint to Laura and Jackie before they leave for the next challenge. Ryan and Rob are the last to leave the detour. What detour would you have done? Both are so hard and my hats are off to all these teams
After their fishy task teams must make their way up the coast to North Chesterman beach. Alain and Audrey stop and ask for directions allowing Rex and Bob to take first place. Once there they must search the beach for their next clue. Clues are attached to paddle boards on the beach. Rex and Bob find the clue easily while Alain and Audrey are all over the place looking for it. Do they tell them where it is. HELL NO! You are in a race for a lot of money, why would you when they are so close behind you. Don’t worry Rex and Bob, I stand behind you! Sukhi and Jinder having never driven an electric car decide to STOP yes stop in the middle of the race to plug-in their car. The gas station attendant tells them they have over 400km to go before they need to plug-in so they stopped for nothing! At the Beach one team member must ride a wave for at least 3 seconds while the other team member films it. Rex tries surfing first but has a hard time. Bob tries but they quickly realize Rex will be doing this challenge. Audrey is out first after a few tries. Mickey and Pete are born naturals on the board and smoke this challenge. Natalie and Meaghan arrive and Rex jokes that they probably have a gold medal in surfing too. They blow through the challenge without much incident. Rex and Bob decided to take a penalty because there is no way they can do this challenge. Shawn didn’t even have an opportunity to get up on his board. He dislocated his shoulder just paddling the wave. After trying to pop it back in on the beach with the help of the medics his arm was locked in place and they ended up having to bring him to the hospital in an ambulance. You never want to see anyone leave a challenge like this! Jackie has always wanted to surf in Tofino and she totally rocked it. Ryan and Rob were the last to leave the surfing challenge as well.
After surfing teams must complete the Roadblock “Sittin’ Pretty”. One person must make a traditional Tofino beach chair using nothing but driftwood, rope and netting. Pete and Alain had some trouble with their chairs but Natalie blew through that challenge like she was born to make chairs. Alain finally gets it and is 2nd out of the roadblock. Alain and Audrey are a less annoying version of Brendan and Rachel. She is always shouting you can do it baby so as they leave the roadblock Rex and Pete poke a little fun at them. After taking a penalty at the route marker Bob decided to take a shot at making a chair. Most of the teams seems to have few problems with the chair. It really doesn’t need to perfect or pretty. It just needs to hold the weight of the judge. Bob had one put together and sturdy but his net wasn’t perfect. He decides to take it apart without getting it judged. BOB WHAT WHERE YOU THINKING! He struggles some more and after declaring that while Rex will never surf, Bob will never make a chair and they take ANOTHER penalty. He should have at least had it judged! What would you have done in that situation, take it apart or have it looked at anyway?
Teams must make their way on foot through the village of Tofino to the Crab Dock for the pit stop for this leg of the race. Natalie and Meaghan and beasts. So far there is nothing these girls can’t do. Natalie and Meaghan check in for their second 1st place finish. For finishing first they win a trip for two to Hong Kong and $2000 spending money. If these ladies keep up this momentum I see them winning this whole race. Alain and Audrey check in second, followed by Mickey and Pete in third. Nicole and Cormac make it to the mat in fourth place. Pierre and Michel are fifth. Rex and Bob make it to the mat in sixth place but are told that because they failed to complete a route marker and roadblock they have a 6 hour penalty that they must wait out off to the side. They go to their penalty bench to wait it out. Here is what I like about these guys. They could be bitter and pissed they have to wait 6 hours but the sit on their bench and welcome each team to the mat. Good sportsmanship goes along way! Sukhi and Jinder take the sixth place spot. Ryan and Rob miraculously make up some ground and go from last to seventh. Laura and Jackie are right behind them in eighth place. At this point Rex and Bob are called back to the mat. We are all told that Jen and Shawn had to withdraw from the race due to the shoulder injury. At one point Jen was hopeful they could make it back to the race and continue on but his injury was just to severe. Rex and Bob are team number nine. Rex and Bob are humbled at the fact that they are still in this due to the downfall of another racer and vow for Shawn’s sake to not quit another challenge. Jen and Shawn are upbeat and just grateful for the opportunity have been on the race at all. Injury is never how you want to see another racer go out but I am glad Shawn is OK and will recover. Who knows, maybe he will get another chance to come back. Dave and Conner did after Dave tore his Achilles and they ended up winning All Stars. Shawn, if you’re reading this. this was your practice race!
Natalie and Meaghan still have that express pass in their hands. They haven’t even discussed who they would want to give it to yet. Besides Jen and Shawn helping Laura and Jackie no alliances have been formed yet either. Who would give it too after watching a couple of legs of the race? Now for why our Teams have stayed in British Columbia for two legs of the race. Next week when The Amazing Race Canada goes INTERNATIONAL for the first time. Yes, you read right. We are leaving Canada and our first stop is Hong Kong. I can’t wait til next week to see how our teams get on overseas. It will be interesting to see if Canadians are received differently than Americans. Will Natalie and Meaghan be recognized as gold medal Olympians? Will they use their fame to their advantage? Tune in next week to find out!
