BIG BROTHER IS BACK! Social media has been going CRAZY with speculation the past several weeks leading up to the premiere of the seventeenth season of our favorite summer obsession. Finally, the rumors and confusion can be put to rest as an all-new group of houseguests enter the house and begin the summer-long battle for a half million dollars! I am excited to be spending the summer recapping Big Brother for the very first time, so let’s get this started!
Once again, the premiere is split up into two nights. The first night, only eight of the new houseguests will be entering the house. We are treated to the obligatory “kidnapping” segments filmed in the houseguests’ hometowns as they receive their shiny Big Brother keys. My favorites from this group are James (the self-proclaimed hillbilly Asian), Austin (or Judas, depending on whether he’s wearing his top hat or not), Da’Vonne and of course Audrey (who I hope will be a ruthless bitch during the season). The eight new houseguests join Julie on stage and she gives them the usual spiel about this being a fierce, grueling battle for a half million dollars, blah blah blah… The first group to enter the house are Da’Vonne, Shelli, Clay and Austin! The first person to get through the door is Da’Vonne and we all know this is a curse! You don’t want to be the first person in the house! The rest of the group (Meg, James, Audrey and Jace) enter the house and the game officially begins!
The houseguests gather in the living room for the standard introductions. They all make their rounds telling the others about their lives outside the house and then we get to Audrey. Audrey reveals to the rest of the group that she is the first transgender person to play Big Brother! Amazingly, the rest of the house takes this pretty well and offers support and cheers for Audrey. Poor Asian Donny James looked a little confused but all in all this was awesome to see history being made on Big Brother 17!
Audrey, Shelli and Da’Vonne voice their concerns about guys running the show as usual and Audrey says that she wants the girls to do well this season. Immediately, we flashback to blue-haired Joey from last season and her failed attempt at a female alliance. Let’s not play too hard too fast, shall we? I know what this alliance needs… GAY GLUE! But I’m getting ahead of myself here. We’ll have to see part 2 of the premiere before we see if this happens.
Julie comes on the screen and calls the houseguests to the living room. She tells them that she will be revealing TWO twists to them. One of them is a “fan favorite” [read: “Grodner’s favorite”] and the other is completely new. She reveals that the Battle of the Block has returned to the BB17 house. As Julie explains the familiar rules of the BOB competitions, every viewer in America throws their remote at their TVs.
After announcing the return of the Battle of the Block, it is now time for the first Head of Household competition of the summer! Before they head outside, they must choose which person will be sitting out of the competition (why, I have no clue). Da’Vonne volunteers to be the one sitting out if they promise not to nominate her. Yeah, right! This is the PERFECT excuse for the first HOH to nominate her without causing too much drama. Kevin Frazier of Entertainment Tonight
introduces the HOH competition with a movie premiere theme. It is time for the BB films premiere of “UFOh No”… but it’s received HORRIBLE reviews, so this competition is called “Flying Tomatoes.” Without falling off their platforms, the houseguests must collect tomatoes as they are hurled at them, and put them into their containers. The first person to get 10 tomatoes or the last to be standing will win jjthe competition. All at once, Meg, Austin and Clay fall off their platforms and are out of the competition. James pulls ahead of the others with more tomatoes, and then everyone falls off the platforms at almost the same time! Julie announces that they will have to go to an instant replay to determine who fell last. After checking the tapes it is determine that JAMES is the first HOH of the season!
Soiled from head to toe in tomato juice, the group gathers on the furniture and I freak out at the thought of having to clean that up and Julie comes on the screen and says that is time to reveal the new twist of the summer! She welcomes them to the Big Brother Takeover, which unleashes “new” twists into the game each and every week throughout the summer. This #BBtakeover even comes complete with its own silly sound effect! Julie leaves them to go crazy with speculation… just like WE’VE been doing for weeks now!
Julie reveals to US that the third twist is the twin twist. The same as it was in Big Brother 5, one of the houseguests has an identical twin that will be switching in and out of the house, competing as one person! If they make it past week 5 without being evicted, they BOTH earn the right to enter and play as individual houseguests!
